The Two Elements of Trust
When someone says that they do or do not trust someone, they are making a statement about their belief in either someone’s competency, their character, or both. Competency is someone’s ability to do a particular thing and to do it well. Someone’s character is their commitment to do what is right – are they honest, are they reliable, do they take responsibility for their actions, (queue list of virtues).
There are times and situations where you will not trust someone because you do not believe they have the ability to do a certain thing and then there are times when you won’t trust someone because you don’t believe they have the character to do what is right in the particular situation.
There are plenty of areas that people should not trust me due to my lack of competency – open heart surgery, singing, gymnastics, etc. – but I hope to always be someone that people can trust in my character – my commitment to do what is right.
“O Lord, who may abide in your tent? Who may dwell on your holy hill? Those … who keep their word even to their hurt” – Psalm 15
