Sometime soon try this simple and powerful way of praying for people – offer people’s names up to God. If done out loud it might sound like the reciting of names at a memorial service, but the intent is different. At a memorial service, the Reading of Names is to honor and remember those that have died. At a memorial service the Reading of Names is done for the hearing of those in attendance. In a prayer of names, we are setting people’s names, lives and situations before God in one or two simple words for God to remember – to draw God’s attention to. This way of praying for others could also be called an offering of names. It is a great way of praying specifically for individuals while trusting that God loves them, knows their situation, and knows best what is best for them.
