Look To God
Throughout scripture, God and pursuers of God continually implore us to “look to God.” This is such a constant encouragement in scripture that “look to God” could very well be the summation of the life of faith or the Christian Life – a life spent looking to God.
Looking to God is a way or a posture of counting on God, relying on God, and expecting things from God. It is putting our attention, hopes, and trust in God.
When the Israelites where caught between the Red Sea and the charging Egyptian army, Moses said to the people, “stand and see the deliverance of the Lord.” (Exodus 14)
Asaph, the priest of King David sang before the people, “Look to the Lord and his strength, seek his face always.” (1 Chronincles 16)
The Psalmist looks to the God and encourages others to look to God for hope, mercy, and rescue. Psalm 34:5, 105:4, 123
Babylon’s King Nebuchadnezzar returned to his senses and was healed when he finally looked to God. (Daniel 4:34)
The prophet Micah in the midst of a cataclysmic situation says, “But as for me, I will look to the Lord in hope, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.” (Micah 7)
In John chapter 3, Jesus tells his disciples that just like bronze snake that God had Moses make in Numbers 21 so that people afflicted with snake bites could look at it and be healed, so Jesus too would be lifted up so that whoever looks to Him can have eternal life.
In his own life, Jesus was constantly looking to God. (Matthew 14:19, John 11:41, John 17:1)
The authors of Hebrews challenge their audience to “fix their eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” (Hebrews 12)
Whatever you are doing today, whatever is going on in your life and the world around you “look to God.” Keep on looking until it becomes the natural habit of your life and you look back in wonder at all that God can do with a life that is looking to Him.
