Hineni
Hineni (pronounced hee-nay-nee) is an important Hebrew word meaning “Here I am.” It is much fuller of meaning than the informal and casual poh (“I’m here”). Hineni connotes being completely present, completely available, immovably surrendered, yielded, having a readiness to do whatever is asked, etc.
Hineni was the response of many of the great figures in the Old Testament to the call or presence of God – Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, etc. – and all though the language is different in the New Testament it is the same sentiment expressed by Mary when she learns that she will receive the gift and bear the burden of being the mother of the Messiah. The life of Jesus is completely immersed with the spirit of hineni towards God.
Hineni is an attitude, a disposition of the entire being, possessed by those who please God.
Perhaps you and I can cultivate this God-pleasing disposition in our own souls today by offering the simple prayer to God – “Here I am.” “Here I am.” “Here I am.”
